I am looking to build a two story house with a basement within the next year. It will be between 2500-3000 Sq Ft. I am playing with the idea of an ICF basement and SIPs above ground. I am located in a suburb of Chicago, IL.  I would like to do as much of the work as I can myself.  I have reading this site for a while and have a few questions.

1.  Are there any Steel SIP makers in my area?

2.  Are there any SIP houses being built in my area?

3.  Why do I not need to use a crane if I am using Steel?

4.  How much lighter are Steel vs. OSB SIPs?

5.  How thick is the steel plate on the panel?

6.  I would like to use NovaBrik on the exterior of the house is this feasible?

zman0125;

1.   Most steel SIPs are produced in the southeast

2.   we have a tentative order for Michigan

3.   Steel SIPs are about 1/2 the weight of OSB panels, typically we install with scissor lifts off a slab or rolling scaffold off  floor decks

4.   6" panels weigh about 1.8 lbs. per square foot, 2 men can easily handle 16 ft. long panels, anything larger we would like to see 4 men ( one on each corner) up to 32 ft., anything larger you will probably need a lift

5.   The skins are not plate, they are sheet steel - 26 ga. white painted galvalume skins

6.   I looked as the NovaBrick installation over sips with furring strips, it looks like it would work for the steel as well

Our field installation project manager is from Chicago, I'm sure he would love to do the install  for you!

Would you need the subfloor installed over the foundation before you start or would you do that also?
