I checked again and they do have a provision for 1/2" and like you stated, it must be sag resistant.

Where it mandates 5/8" ceiling drywall, no exceptions, is on the garage ceiling above habitable space.

  • Drywall properly nailed (7” on center for nails, 12” on center for screws).
  • 5/8” drywall on the ceiling of the garage supporting habitable space above.
  • Green board cannot be used in a horizontal application unless the framing members are 12” on center for ½” drywall 16” on center for 5/8” drywall.
  • Drywall on interior ceilings is 5/8” or ½” ceiling rated (sag resistant) where framing members are 24 inches on center.

Lbear;
Yes fire rated ceilings and walls are a completely different animal.
Not only does it need to be 5/8" on the garage ceiling,
it also needs to be "type x" or fire resistant.
the inspector will want to see the labeling on the tapered edge of the drywall at the "screw inspection stage" before finishing begins.
In the case of an open parking area it would also need to be exterior grade - Type X.
1/2" may also be used in exterior porch applications as long as it is exterior grage ceiling board.
there is a noticable ridgidity to the board.

That came directly from the County Code in my area that was posted online at the counties website.

As far as what I observed, here in my home I experienced drywall cracks in some areas after they blew in more fiberglass. It's R-40 right now but the drywall is 5/8". Whether or not it caused it, I cannot prove it 100% but all the evidence leads up to the fact that it happened after I added more insulation. While not "sag", it did crack in the spans between the trusses.

probably from the guys walking around in your attic, r40 fiberglass weighs around nothing per square foot.

You missed the one, it's Yavapai County:
